The goal of basic sciences is to understand the Nature, while fufilling human's curiosity. Research in basic sciences can make crucial contributions to the formation of human's worldview. Furthermore discovery in basic science leads to groundbreaking new technologies so that research-centric universities should support the research in basic sciences.
In March of 1987 the graduate school of Postech was founded and one witnessed the growth of the research activities in basic sciences. Thus the institute was needed to support basic science research activities, exhibiting the willingness of the University to support.
To meet such expectations and to secure the excellence of the graduate school, Postech made foundation planning of the Basic Science Research Instititute in January of 1989. On the 2rd of March, 1989 the Basic Science Research Instititute was founded.
The goals of the Basic Science Research Institute are maximizing the research capability of the basic science research groups, fostering world-class basic science research manpower, creation of inter-disciplinary research projects through academic exchanges of related fields, active participation in conducting national science-technology policies and the support of various scholarly activities.
